In some parts of the country, it is almost unheard of to let a dog live outside in the yard. In other places, this is a fairly common way to keep the family pet. In some cases people simply believe a dog’s place is outside by the dog house. But in many other instances a behavior problem has caused the family to isolate the dog, outside the home. Some of the most common behaviors include housebreaking issues, barking problems and destructive chewing. Invariably the dog’s owner has not invested the proper time to actually resolve those problems. And in fact, placing a dog outside may cause new issues. Dogs left unattended for long periods of time often engage in boredom behaviors such as incessant barking and digging. If we merely train the dog to toilet outside and behave well in the home, you can enjoy a much richer experience as a pet owner than you can when your dog is chained or fenced outside.

Some people believe that the dog offers more protection for the family when outside the house, and this factors into the housing decision. In reality, a dog always offers more security to the home when kept inside. First, dogs left outside may bark so much that family and neighbors learn to ignore them. Second, a would-be burglar will find it an easy matter to just poison your dog if he really wants entry. Think about it from the burglar’s point of view for a moment. Which is more frightening? Seeing a dog on a chain, or being surprised by the barking when you touch the doorknob? Some of the best watch dogs are not very impressive in terms of size. But they make up for size with extreme alertness and noise making. In order to really share live on a deep level we must also share hearth and home. This means we must take the trouble to teach house rules to our dogs so they can stay out of trouble and truly become part of the family. Many dog trainers specialize in helping owners convert outside dogs to inside dogs. Did you think it can’t be done? Of course it can. If you keep your dog outside, you have little more than a living lawn ornament. Bring your dog in, teach him how to function successfully, and you have a best friend who will sleep by your door, and keep one eye open for security. Are you losing your pets to accidents? Do they wander and never return? Show them that you care. Keep your pets safe from harm with the <a

In addition, these exotic pets also tend to bite, scratch or claw much more often than the familiar cats and dogs.

The germs on their bodies and their unpredictable behavior can put younger children at risk, particularly those aged five and under. Children in this age group are more vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing and they also put their hands in their mouths more often than at older stages.

Parents have little understanding of the risks from potential infections exotic pets carry, according to researchers. They cited that:

One out of 10 salmonella-related illnesses in children is believed to arise from playing with small reptiles like lizards, iguanas and turtles. One hundred and three cases of salmonella infection in the late 2007 were due to pet turtles.

The same germ is also found in hamsters and can induce severe diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps.

Salmonella is common in baby chicks. Young children love to kiss or touch these animals, and the germs transfer to their mouths.

Hedgehogs have sharp quills that can penetrate children’s skins. This can introduce bacteria into the inner layers of skin and cause fever, rashes and stomach pains.

In 2003, an outbreak of monkey pox infected 20 people in the Midwest. The germs came from imported African Gambian rats which infected prairie dogs subsequently sold as pets.

The study said pet reptiles may be present in nearly four million households across the country. This estimate was based on data from the American Veterinary Medical Association.

The report also noted a 75 percent increase in the number of exotic pets in the country from 1992. By 2005, illegal importations of exotic pets into the country had grown to 88,000 mammals, 1.3 million reptiles and 203 million fish.

The report also warned that children can be infected even in public places when they touch animals at zoos.

Are you losing your pets to accidents? class="alignleft size-full wp-image-709" title="Arthritis and your pet" src="http://www.e-petcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/thai-_ridgeback_dog2.jpg" alt="Arthritis and your pet" width="311" height="154" />Arthritis doesn’t discriminate. It affects not only people of all ages — including children — but also strikes our furry friends too. If you’re a dog-owner, be sure to check your dog for signs of arthritis.

This common condition affects one in every five adult dogs in the United States and is one of the most common sources of chronic pain in pets.

How do you know if it’s arthritis? Your dog can’t tell you what’s wrong so take note of your pet’s non-verbal communication. It may its own way of telling you how bad things are.

Signs that your dog may have arthritis include favoring a limb, difficulty sitting or standing, sleeping more, stiff or sore joints, hesitancy to jump, run or climb stairs, weight gain, decreased activity or less interest in play, attitude or behavior changes, and being less alert.

If your dog has any of these symptoms for more than two weeks, see a vet for an arthritis evaluation which will involve a physical exam and possibly X-rays.

The best way to manage arthritis in your pet is to get an accurate diagnosis and start treatment plan as soon as possible.

Treating canine arthritis is similar to human arthritis and therapies may include:

A healthy diet and exercise plan to help maintain proper weight.

Effective drug therapy to relieve pain – this usually involves the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – the most common treatment for arthritis in dogs.

Over-the-counter pet treatments containing either glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate or omega fatty acids may also be used. These may help relieve the symptoms of arthritis in dogs.

Follow your vet’s instructions and never give your dog human medication without checking with your veterinarian first. Certain medications can be toxic to dogs — particularly acetaminophen and ibuprofen — and a safe dose will differ between a greyhound and a dachshund.

No matter how you treat your dog’s arthritis, work closely with a veterinarian for best results.

If your dog or cat suffers from arthritis pain, don’t make it suffer any longer. Relieve joint pain, lubricate the joints, increase flexibility and improve mobility with this Keeping your pet cat healthy is usually not a complicated process. Most cats stay naturally healthy as long as you give them a nutritious diet, clean water, a comfortable home and plenty of love and attention. But there are a few things you should do when you get a new cat in your home to prevent health problems later.

The proper vaccinations have saved the lives of millions of cats. Vaccines have been developed that now routinely prevent once common fatal diseases in cats, including feline leukemia, distemper, rabies, upper respiratory infections and ringworm.

While most vets agree that an initial vaccination is important, there is controversy over whether your cat needs regular annual booster shots throughout its life or if the first shots give lifelong immunity to the targeted diseases.

Shots used to be given in the traditional fashion using a needle but new vaccines can now be administered through the cat’s nostrils. Typically, kittens should receive their shots at between four and 20 weeks of age but you should discuss the matter with your veterinarian and follow his or her advice.

Cats are vulnerable to catching colds, just like humans (but never give your cat aspirin, Tylenol, or any other human pain reliever or cold medicine). If your cat just has a mild case of the sniffles and still seems playful and energetic, then the problem will likely go away in a few days by itself. But if your cat becomes listless, loses its appetite or if you see a discharge from its eyes or nose, talk to your vet right away.

Your cat loves to chew on greenery and often the only thing it can find indoors will be your house plants. Unfortunately, some of these plants can be poisonous to your cat (and even if the plant isn’t toxic, there may be pesticides sprayed on the plants that are harmful). It can take only a small mouthful to make your cat seriously ill. If this happens, take action immediately to save your cat’s health and possibly its life.

One way to discourage your cat from chewing your plants, even the ones you know are safe, is to regularly spray them with diluted lemon water. Your cat hates that taste and will learn to avoid the plants. You can give your cat catnip and other “cat grass” sold at pet stores to satisfy your pet’s desire to chew plants.

A beneficial side effect is that your cat’s digestion will improve and you will help it eliminate hairballs. It’s possible that your cat will occasionally throw up a bit of greenish bile but as long as it doesn’t do this constantly, it’s nothing to worry about.

If your dog or cat suffers from arthritis pain, don’t make it suffer any longer. The completed pond should be beautiful to behold and, at the same time, provide a good home for your Koi.A Koi pond construction project can be a most rewarding endeavor if you have the knowledge and skill to do it yourself.

If you have some construction experience and are handy at projects like this, you could choose to build the Koi pond yourself. If you decide to take on the project yourself, I suggest using a pond kit to help you get started.

Getting professional help with the project will certainly cost you more but may save you a lot of headaches in the end. Doing it yourself and using a pond kit can be cheaper but if you install it incorrectly, you will probably spend more in the end getting your mistakes corrected.

The biggest reason for doing the project yourself is getting it done the way you want. Building something that you created yourself will certainly allow you to brag to friends and family. Plus, such a project can be quite enjoyable if you like working outdoors with hands.

There are disadvantages, of course, in using pond kits. A simple setup can take a day or two, but if you plan to have more detail in your pond, it will take longer to finish. And if you have a problem in scheduling work time on your project, your Koi pond may take months to complete.

When you planned your Koi pond the design was just what you wanted and had that unique look – just perfect for your garden. Once into the project you may find the need for special tools or equipment. Since you are not a professional the end result may not have that “professional” look or worse yet may have some hidden construction problems that will haunt you over time.

Hiring that professional builder or landscape engineer may mean more money, but the result may be well worth it. Getting it done right the time will prove much less expensive in the long run. It may even be better for your fish.

If you do decide in the end to get professional help, make sure they know what they are doing. Stay away from exceptionally low bids, even though they may look very tempting. If you want to save money, see if there is some way you could do at least some of the work yourself. What eve you do remember the pond is a permanent structure. It won’t be easy to modify later. My advice is to make it as large as your budget will allow. Put in all the features you can at the start. It will be much more expensive to add later on if it’s even possible after the pond is completed.
<p

When symptoms develop, it’s usually too late to do anything and not even a good veterinarian can help you.

These diseases often damage interior organs and lead to death. If you have dogs, here are some canine diseases you should be aware of:

Rabies – is a viral neuroinvasive disease that causes acute inflammation of the brain in warm-blooded animals. It is transmitted by mammals, most commonly by a bite from an infected animal. It is fatal if left untreated. In some countries, rabies is a significant killer of livestock.

Canine parvo virus – another major disease caused by the parvo virus – the most common viral infection in dogs. It can spread through direct or indirect contact with the feces of infected dogs. This disease is mostly harmful to puppies and can lead to death. Symptoms appear within three to ten days and include vomiting, dehydration, bloody diarrhea and high fever. This disease can cause several other infections in dogs. It can be detected by the hemaggutination test or an electron microscope.

Infectious hepatitis – this viral disease affects dogs by causing hemorrhages and severe liver damage. Clinical signs vary from severe to in apparent (i.e., no manifest signs). Congenital heart disease – mostly inherited and may occur in one percent of all dogs. Heart disorders may lead to secondary diseases such as pneumonia, the accumulation of fluid in body cavities, labored breathing, edema and heart failure.

Dermatitis – common symptoms include skin inflammation and loss of hair. Causative agents are nutritional deficiencies, bacterial infections, hypothyroidism, allergies, hormone imbalances and parasites (e.g., fleas, lice, mites, fly larvae, and ticks). The cure rate depends on the detection of the virus in the body of the animal. If it is detected earlier, the dog can survive quickly. Thus, it is important to look for symptoms and cure it accordingly.

If your dog or cat suffers from arthritis pain, don’t make it suffer any longer. Relieve joint pain, lubricate the joints, increase flexibility and improve mobility with the right This may come as a shock but 50% of all cats over the age of 10 have some form of cancer.

Extensive research and advances in veterinary medicine and oncology have helped to extend the life of cats with cancer. Unfortunately, these treatments often take a large physical toll on the pet, as well as a great expense to the owner. Alternative therapies offer great hope, whether they are used to offset the toxic effects of cancer treatment, or, as an alternative to conventional treatment.

The ability of your cat to survive cancer depends on how quickly it is diagnosed, the type of cancer, and your commitment to ferret out the potential causes in your home. Different types of cancer will require slightly different treatments, but in all cases, the underlying cause of cancer is a weakened immune system.

The Cornerstone of Health- The Immune System

The body is made up of billions of cells. As old cells die, they are automatically replaced with new “identical” cells. In a healthy body, the amount of cells replicated equals the amount of cells that die off: Any cells that are abnormal are targeted by the immune system and removed before they replicate.

Two things happen when the immune system breaks down:

1. The old cells do not die off when they should,

2. Abnormal cells that are not being recognized by the immune system begin to replicate. These conglomerations of abnormal and damaged cells begin to bind together, and form a mass- cancer.

Primary Causes of Cat Cancer

It is now known that the cornerstones of pet ownership- vaccinations and manufactured pet foods- are involved in immune system break down!

You can minimize the potential for cat cancer, by reducing the frequency of vaccines and changing you cat’s diet away from packaged cat foods. Also, adding immune system supplements encourages the immune system to fight back against cancer cells in sick cats.
<p

Dogs are more susceptible to arthritis than cats and larger dog breeds are more vulnerable than smaller breeds.

There are many factors that cause arthritis. These include ligament, tendon or muscle disease like a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament; fractures involving the joint; developmental disorders like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, osteochondritis dissecans and Legg-Perthes diseases; and congenital disorders like Wobbler’s syndrome (cervical spondylomyelopathy) and luxated patella.

Other possible causes are dietary and hormonal disease like hyperparathyroidism or obesity; metabolic disorders like von Willebrand’s disease (hemophilia) in dogs; cancer; degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis); inflammatory joint disease like, Lyme disease and rheumatoid arthritis; degenerative spinal joint disease like intervertebral disc disease and cauda equina syndrome.

Medical treatment of hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis has greatly improved in the last several years thanks to the introduction and approval of several new supplements and drugs. Because hip dysplasias (and other types of dysplasias) are primarily inherited conditions, there are no products in the market that prevent their development.

Through proper diet, exercise, supplements, anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relief, you may be able to decrease the progression of degenerative joint disease but the looseness in the joint or bony changes will not change significantly.

Medical management is indicated for both young dogs with clinical signs and for older dogs with chronic osteoarthritis. Because of the high cost involved with many surgeries, medical management is often the only realistic option for many pet owners. Medical management is multifaceted.

If your dog or cat suffers from arthritis pain, don’t make it suffer any longer. Antibiotics often only relieve the symptoms but do not get to the core problem.

That’s why your dog continues to have a urinary tract infection. Read on to understand how using a natural remedy for urinary tract infection in dogs brings permanent relief to your dog and you peace-of-mind.

There are different causes of bacterial infections of the bladder. Sometimes they can recur because of a birth defect such as an ectopic ureter. Other times they can be caused by an illness like bladder stones or a bladder tumor.

In order to determine the cause and give a correct diagnosis, it is important to go to a veterinarian when you first notice the signs that something is wrong. If the infection is detected in its late stages, conventional treatment with antibiotics may be necessary. It the infection is in its early stages, a natural remedy for urinary tract infection in dogs will most likely do the trick. If the underlying cause of the infection is bladder stones, a tumor, or a birth defect, surgery may be necessary to keep the infection from coming back. In any case, in order to promote a healthy bladder, a healthy flow of urine, and a strong immune system that can fight off infections, a natural remedy for urinary tract infection in dogs can be highly beneficial.

When you get your dog on a program using a homeopathic medicine, you provide your dog with a stronger immune system that prevents the dog bladder infection – and other infections from returning. If you give your dog repeated doses of antibiotics, all you do is suppress symptoms and can bet that the underlying problem is not fixed. This means the infection will return to cause your dog pain again.

Many pet owners are worried about giving their dogs antibiotics because of the potential side effects. Dogs metabolize most of the drugs which then pass through the urine so they have to take high doses of them to compensate. These high doses can lead to an aggravation of the symptoms of UTI.

In contrast, a using a natural remedy for urinary tract infection in dogs is far safer for your dog and you can give it as part of his daily nutritional program. All you do is mix it in his food and he’ll never know its there. There is a pleasant taste and such a small amount dog’s never realize they are taking medicine.

<a

If you are concerned about using antibiotics over and over again you now know you have an alternative. Find a natural remedy for urinary tract infection in dogs that is not only affordable it is safe too.

Get away from the toxic medicines that really don’t do much to help your dogs overall health. Consider giving a homeopathic remedy a try and see how your dog’s overall health improves dramatically.

<span

The latter means that anyone may purchase the medicine without the consent or advice of veterinary doctor. In short, no prescription is needed.

A prescription medication is one that Food and Drug Administration regulations allow to be obtained only by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Commonly, pet owners will ask a veterinarian for a written prescription for medications in order to procure those medicines from a source other than the examining veterinarian. Veterinarians are ethically bound to provide a written prescription upon the patient’s request and to document the data in the pet’s medical record.

The veterinarian may ethically charge a fee for writing the prescription and that prescription writing fee can be whatever the veterinarian chooses. The bottom line is that the client does not have to obtain or purchase the pet medication from the examining veterinarian.

Keep in mind that the veterinarian is not required to call, fax or correspond with the pet owner’s supplier; but that person is ethically obligated to provide a written prescription so that the patient can obtain the medication at a supplier of his or her own choosing.

Some non-prescription medications are “sold only to licensed veterinarians”. This is a company policy and not mandated by law. It is not illegal for a veterinarian to re-sell non-prescription medications to other pharmacies or outlets; nor is it illegal for another business to sell these non-prescription products.

All pet medications should be treated with respect. Keep in mind that individual animals may have an adverse reaction to just about any medication.

Your veterinarian should always be your first source of information about pet health care. Years of special training and a commitment to keeping your pet healthy will work to your advantage whenever your pet needs care or medications.

If your dog or cat suffers from arthritis pain, don’t make it suffer any longer. If they are properly cared for, turtles can live for many decades, but you need to pay close attention to their diets, living arrangements, and treatment. Turtles need to have plenty of room to live in where enough light, shade and moisture will also be supplied.

Because turtles hibernate during winter months, they are looking to hide at this period. The best way is to keep them outside during this time of year and they will find a way to hibernate. Keep in mind that a turtle that does not hibernate is known to develop liver diseases.

So if you keep your turtle outside in order to respect its natural cycle try to keep children away from the turtle hideout so they won’t be tempted to dig it out. Be aware that if your turtle hibernates, you won’t see it again until late spring.

Some people use refrigerators to try to recreate an environment for ideal hibernation. This option is not recommended as a refrigerator can be victim of a power failure and a sudden increase in temperature could interrupt the turtle’s hibernation and even be fatal to the pet. So as a general rule, if you plan on keeping your turtle inside, don’t let it hibernate.

If you really decide to keep the turtle indoors, you need a tank of at least forty gallon capacity, with clearly demarcated areas for land and water. Sixty six percent of the aquarium should be water and one-third should be land because you need a place where they can lay in the heat of a lamp.

The most ideal temperature of the aquarium is about eighty degrees during the day and seventy degrees during the night. Because they are cold-blooded animals, they would need more time to acclimatize themselves to temperature fluctuations and so it is not a good idea to take them out of their environment to show them around as the difference of temperature could affect their immune system.

Some turtles carry salmonella so be sure to clean your hands after handling them, but, their environment also needs to be kept clean too. You might have to think about a water purification system to clean the water and keep it clean. It is not a good thing to fill up the tank with tap water, which may contain chlorine, and fluoride and therefore could harm the pH balance. Use filtered water for drinking needs and de-chlorinated water for their swimming needs.

Various types of food for your pet turtle are available commercially, but the food needs depend basically on the species, however they must never be fed more than two or three times a week. Do not put any wood chips or tree bark in your tank because if a turtle ingests this, it can cause health issues plus it will also contaminate the water very quickly and cause molds or fungus to grow.

Don’t forget turtles need twelve hours of sunlight, so if you are keeping your pet indoors, you have to put up a UV lamp to provide the Vitamin D3 turtles need. This is why you see these creatures basking in the sun for hours, so when inside keep the tank at a place where there is not much temperature variation and some shady area for them to relax.

You could either make them with wood and stones or buy them from pet stores, but if you want to keep plants in the tank, make sure that they are safe for the turtles. Try to pay careful attention to your turtle’s behavior to keep it happy and it will provide lots of enjoyment for your whole family.

Pet ownership in America has often been associated with families, especially those who had someone to constantly attend to their pets’ needs. In the past, singles and couples who often worked didn’t have the luxury to own pets. However, as pets can now be trained to behave while their owners are away at work, they are now being considered more as family members and friends.

Based on the 2005-2006 National Pet Owner Survey of the America Pet Products Association, pet ownership is now 63% of the country’s total households. Most of these households prefer dogs, birds and cats for pets. This is mainly due to their loving personalities as well as their faithfulness to their owners, traits that pet owners are endeared to. In return for such love, owners also lavish their pets with attention and affection.

The quality of love and care that owners give to their pets are often threatened when the owners have to temporarily hand over their pets to other people. This often arises when owners have to travel and be away from home for a long period of time. The separation of owners and their pets are often emotionally taxing and worrisome.

Historically, owners who often faced such quandary usually had two options: appealing to neighbors to at least regularly feed their pets or letting them board in a kennel or a family member’s place. For the most part, both options have caused stress and shock to owners (for the uncertain quality of care that their pets will get) and their pets (who have to deal with new people, playmates and surroundings).

The good news for pet owners is that there is a better option to those previously mentioned. Pet sitting is a relatively new service in America which provides personalized care to pets while their owners are away. Pet sitting addresses two of the immediate problems often encountered by pet owners: unfamiliar care-givers and environment.

With pet sitting, pets get to stay in the comfort of their home and get their regular dose of tender loving care which is provided by regular pet sitter. Availing of a pet sitting service ensures a pet owner that only one pet sitter will be around to give care to a pet. This assures familiarity and regularity, one which is critical for a pet especially in the absence of its recognizable owner. A pet sitter also ensures that the routine followed by owners and pets are continued while carrying out other tasks specified by the pet owner. Regular routine includes feeding, exercise, play, medication and grooming.

Finally, pet sitting guarantees that only professional pet sitters provide this service. Hence, they are able to ascertain a pet’s needs which owners sometimes fail to notice (e.g. vet schedules, new and effective shots). Beyond these, sitters also make sure that an owner’s house is safe.

Pet sitting is an owner’s way of keeping its pet safe and well-loved. Try it, if you are one! The comfort it brings might just give you a pleasant surprise.
<p

This article will look at ways to overcome these two problems.

Firstly let’s get to the bottom of Digging. Dogs dig for a number of reasons, they might find it fun, they may be bored or frustrated, they may be able to smell something interesting such as a rat or any other kind of garden rodent, or they may in fact be trying to escape.

If you think that your dog may be bored and frustrated, start stimulating its mind more. Daily training sessions of 10 – 15 minutes can be very fun and entertaining for your dog and in some cases will be enough to stop the digging totally. If you jog or run, take your dog along – the exercise will do it benefits not only physically but also mentally. Try buying your dog some new and interesting toys and swap them around from time to time. You don’t need to give your dog all their toys at the same time.

If your dog is digging because he loves to dig, you might find it useful to allocate a portion of your yard for digging purposes. Train your dog to dig there by burying treats and toys and praising him when he digs in that area.

If all else fails, spray some dog digging deterrent around your yard. Dogs hate the stuff and it’ll almost definitely put an end to the digging (at least temporarily). Dog digging deterrents can be purchased online for around $7 or at your local vet shop.

The second common issue I want to mention is dogs breaking open trash bags. Dogs are programmed to take food whenever its on offer so doing this really comes naturally to them. Whenever a dog spots and opportunity to eat, they take it as in the wild they never knew when they would next get the opportunity.

The easiest way to solve this problem is to put the trash where your dog can’t get at it. Leave it in the garage overnight or in some other garden shed. If you have absolutely nowhere you can leave the trash, try to catch your dog opening the bag and instantly discipline him.

Another way you can teach your dog not to go through the trash is to booby trap the trash. Balance a few empty cans or nuts and bolts on top of the trash. When your dog tries to rip the bag open these will fall on the floor and hopefully make such a noise that it will be turned off returning any time soon.

Lastly, another option is to use some form of smell deterrent such as bitter apple spray or something similar. Sprinkling cayenne pepper or chilli powder on the trash bags also works well as most dogs dislike the smell and flavor of these.

<a
